Jan 13, 2005 · Well the addition of the steering wheel controls project is complete. I just got the truck back from the dealer who did the programming per NAR's post, and everything works. Thanks for everyones input on this topic. The total cost about $355 dollars for parts (found a used steering wheel ($65) new clockspring ($210) and programming ($80).Also pay attention to the airbag, many of these years that had optional steering controls have two different airbags to accommodate. So in the best case you pay $200 for a wheel in decent shape with the buttons and just plug in some wires. I believe the steering wheel controls work off resistance to ground. so when you press one button it gives a value out and the headunit knows that value to be volume up for example. this type of wiring would only need 2 wires I believe. a signal wire and a ground wire.
